White Lodge Wins Best Family Home at the Sunday Times British Homes Awards

London architects Dyer Grimes Architects scooped one of the most coveted awards in UK design when its iconic modernist villa, White Lodge in Surrey, took the crown at this year’s Sunday Times British Homes Awards.
The ultra contemporary cubic design was named best ‘Family Home’ by an esteemed panel of judges, who believed that the iconic building could hold its own ‘among California’s finest.
White Lodge is a 480m2 sustainable family home built on the site of an existing pre-fab bungalow. Dyer Grimes Architects’ elegant designs combine hardwood cladding with crisp white render and an abundance of glass throughout.
The cantilevered design of the house creates the illusion that the structure is hovering effortlessly in mid-air above its own reflection in the glass-ended swimming pool below. This combines with extensive walls of glazing to draw the surrounding landscape into the house and maximize views of the Surrey Hills beyond.
Not just a beacon of modern architecture, White Lodge also allows for highly sustainable living, providing 12% of its energy usage from renewable sources. With a thermally efficient envelope, the under-floor heating system is powered by the combination of an air source heat pump, solar hot water panels and super efficient gas boiler.
